Description: This lesson is the first of its series to provide guidance to child care centers on food purchasing procedures. This course has been written to provide guidance to small child care centers serving up to 150 meals per day (breakfast, lunches, and snacks) to children enrolled in the center for care and for adults caring for the children.

Objectives:
• State the four goals of successful food purchasing
• Identify the eleven steps in the food purchasing process
• Explain why menus planning is the first step in the food purchasing process and
• Identify resources available to assist with menu planning
• Create a grocery list
• Estimate the quantities of food to be purchased for “Menu Items” on the grocery list by using the on-line calculator for the • Food Buying Guide for Child Nutrition Programs
